Lark Rise to Candleford
Just want to tell everyone that the first of the new drama series "Lark Rise to Candleford" starts tonight. (Sunday 13th Jan BBC1 at 7.40....just before Sense and Sensibility!)
For anyone who doesn't know of this book (Flora Thompson author) about a girl growing up in rural Oxfordshire in the 1870's there is a bit of info here http://www.bbc.co.uk/drama/larkrise/
I really really hope they don't ruin it. It is my favourite book; and if they do ruin it I'll find it hard to forgive them!!!!! LOL

The reviews say it's not much like the book - particularly the Dawn French character. I'm still looking forward to it though.
Well.....I did enjoy it but it wasn't what I expected. They have left out the first book altogether and gone straight into "Over to Candleford".
I must admit that I had thought that as the first book is largely descriptive rather than story it would be difficult to make a TV production of it. Given that, then it is quite a good representation of the story....except that Dorcas should be absolutely enormous if it is to be true to the book!
I loved these books also. I don't think I could bring myself to watch a show based on them. In my experience, the movies/tv shows always focus on the most shallow aspects of the books. Fortunately, I am in the U.S. where most people have no idea about these books.
To me, Flora T.'s great skill lies in her sociological view of a world that was rapidly changing. Her books are probably part of why I studied so musch history/anthroipology/folklore etc. in college.
I agree totally with what you say. And in fact the show was not near enough to what she has written to either ruin my mental picture or to realise it! I think we could describe the series as very loosely based on some of the stories from the book. It was enjoyable, and I think we'll watch them because, as one of the reviewers says, it is like watching one long Hovis advert.
I recently learned of this programme, and since it is one of my favourite books, I was eager to hear what people thought. Having read it so many times, I doubt if any film of it would measure up to the vision I have formed regarding characters, and the places mentioned. Seeing here that it it seems to be only loosely based on Flora's story, I can probably watch it, and not be disappointed. In fact watch it and detatch myself from her writing. Now I just have to wait and see if it is picked up over here..!
